Oral Health Maintenance

Brushing and Flossing:

Proper brushing and flossing are very important while in orthodontic treatment to prevent the development of permanent white marks, cavities, and gum disease.

  • Try to brush after each meal and snack.
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste along with a soft rounded toothbrush.
  • Angle your toothbrush to brush on ALL surfaces of your teeth (over and under the brackets along with the front, back and sides of all teeth).
  • Remember to also brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth, and to gently brush your gums.
  • Rinse thoroughly after brushing.
  • Floss at least once a day especially before going to bed.
  • Finish by using an over-the-counter fluoride mouthwash/rinse.
  • Look to see if your braces are clean and shiny!

Braces do NOT cause decay, but may make some areas in your mouth harder to clean.  Remember, poor oral hygiene can permanently harm your teeth and gums.

Regular Dental Cleanings :

While in orthodontic treatment, it is necessary for you to continue to visit your general dentist for regular dental cleanings and checkups, at least every 4 months.  If you have previously seen a periodontist, please continue care with this specialist at least every 4 months, unless otherwise directed by the periodontist.
